"The enactment of the Social Security Act marked a great advance in affording more equitable and effective protection to the people of this country against widespread and growing economic hazards. The successful operation of the Act is the best proof that it was soundly conceived." "we should be constantly seeking to perfect and strengthen it in the light of our accumulating experience and growing appreciation of social needs."
- President Franklin D. Roosevelt, April 28, 1938
"I do not want to cut benefits or raise the retirement age. I believe there are a number of ways we can make Social Security solvent that do not involve placing these added burdens on our seniors."
- President Barack Obama, September 21, 2007
"I think that's why the best way forward is to first look to adjust the cap on the payroll tax"
- President Barack Obama, October 16, 2008
Cuts to Social Security, including raising the retirement age, will kill jobs for young Americans while putting the elderly and sick at risk in their greatest time of need.
Congress should scrap the cap that limits the amount some Americans invest so that every worker is paying their fair share.
We must keep Social Security safe, stable and secure by making the payroll tax equal for all Americans.
